Real Girl
Entering Grade 8: July 11th - July 24th, 2010
This program is now waiting list only.
When the campers are getting ready for grade eight, we get real. We get real about magazines, movies, music videos, internet, mom, dad, boys, school, food, clothes—everything. Girls look at all the messages that they receive about what kind of girl they “should” be, determine who creates those messages, and interrogate why those messages exist. Campers get the time, space and training to figure out who they want to be, and why, and how to stay true to themselves.
Life at GLI
The best thing about life at GLI? The friends. Because we limit the program to about 20 girls, we can make sure that campers are matched with awesome roommates and are divided into close-knit, small advisory groups. It is the relationships that girls form at GLI that give them the confidence to take risks, be silly and try things they’ve never done before. In the Real Girl program girls get intensely honest about how they think of themselves, their bodies, and their school and home life. GLI pushes girls to think about what they dream of for themselves and how to really get there.
Workshops
Real Girl Workshops are hands-on, fun and creative. This is were we pour over magazines, check out music videos, vent about ads and dream-up new ways of being in the world. Workshop topics include: Magazine Messages, Good Girl vs. Real Girl, Music Videos, Real Beauty, Body Language Glossary, Constructing Confidence and more.
Project
Real Girl projects run for one week and then campers can choose to continue their projects or to try something new. Projects may include photography, Girls Make Movies, theatre and improvisation, creative writing, book making and more.
Trips and Events
GLI gives girls challenges so that they can experience real accomplishment. We go to a high and low ropes course, take hikes and enjoy outdoor adventures. We get off campus every few days for a leadership challenge or just for fun.
Weekends are all about chilling out. We head to the lake for a day, look for fun shows to go see, or plan extreme July fourth celebrations. We finish camp with one big all-camp sleepover.
Food
Every meal is served buffet style. Campers pick from a wide selection of delicious options. Counselors are aware of what is on campers’ plates and make sure that protein makes an appearance a couple times a day. We encourage girls to have at least two or three colors on their plate for lunch and dinner. To help the girls develop healthy habits we don’t offer fried foods or soda.
Schedule
We keep GLI campers moving!
Here’s a sample day:
- 8:45 – Theater games and improvisation
- 9:45 – Morning workshops
- 11:30 – Small group advisory discussions
- 12:15 – Lunch
- 1:00 – Free time. The highlight of this time is mail! Letters and care packages are distributed and every one enjoys an hour of snacking on gummy worms, playing games, or just swapping stories in the gazebo.
- 2:00 – Pick your art project!
- 4:00 – It’s time to get moving. If it’s hot we head to the pool. Other choices might include a short hike, yoga, basketball, Pilates, soccer, tennis and more.
- 6:00 – Dinner
- 7:00 – Evenings are nothing but fun. Some of our activities include game show night, scavenger hunt, mask making, jewelry making, a trip to the theatre or movies, and much more.
- 9:30 – Love notes! Hall time, then we get ready for bed.
On the weekends we like to sleep in and eat breakfast in our PJs. Then we head to the lake for the day, or town for an afternoon of ice cream and hanging with our friends. If the stars are out we might stay up a little late and find the Big Dipper.
