Junior Expedition
Entering Grade 10 - 12, Third Year: July 18th - August 8th, 2010
In summer 2010, GLI will team up with Eve’s Fund, a non-profit organization promoting Native American health initiatives, to bring girls leadership to the next level. In your third year you will take a three-week journey: you will leave the Miss Hall’s School campus and travel to a Navajo reservation in Red Mesa, Arizona, where there are no other summer camp opportunities for girls. As part of our cultural exchange program you'll run a day camp for girls in grades five through eight. You'll return to GLI with a new understanding of yourself, your GLI sisters and your potential. You'll gain experience teaching, leading, and mentoring and you'll develop a keen awareness and appreciation for the Navajo culture.
You will prepare for your trip with a week of workshops and conversations at Miss Hall’s on topics like teaching practices, privilege, diversity, Navajo history, team building, communication and planning. Then you will fly from Boston to Albuquerque and continue onto Red Mesa, AZ, to run a one-week day camp for Navajo girls in grades five – eight. Each day the camp runs from 9am – 4pm. From 4pm until 6pm you will debrief the day and prepare for the next day. After dinner there will be nightly events where Navajo leaders will teach you about Navajo history and culture, including cooking, weaving, story telling, jewelry making and summer ceremonies.
Before returning back to GLI, there will be a three-day adventure exploring Moab, UT through rivers (YEA!), camping (NO BUGS!), and up high ropes (this IS GLI). Back at camp you will rest, debrief your experience, and prepare to share your journey with others in the camp community and beyond. Don’t worry, you won’t miss the Olympiad. Then all that is left to do is to decide if you’re ready to go international in year four.
Workshops
Before heading west, you will learn how to teach through educational theatre, facilitate games and discussions, indentify your leadership style, and engage in frank discussions around privilege and diversity. You will also review the GLI foundational tools for effective communication, such as expressing emotions, Pushing vs. Avoiding, Contribution and the Four Steps of Conflict. You'll choose which part of the day camp you want to lead. Options will include games, workshops, crafts, sports, and small groups discussions. Every participant will help document the trip through journaling, blogging and photography.
When you return from your trip you will debrief on the group dynamics, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of your Day Camp. You will then prepare to share your work using your Sophomore Summer Skills: public speaking, blogging, photography and Power Point.
Life at GLI
Junior Expedition will be unlike your other years at GLI. There are no advisory groups, no required fitness activities, no afternoon projects, and no evening activities. You will be working with your trip leader Julia Loonin and teacher Shelby Knox to help prepare you for your trip, that means everything from packing light to facilitating Poop Deck. You WILL have your cell phones when you are off campus, but we will ask you to limit your texts and conversations when you are guests on the Navajo reservation.
