FAQ
What’s a typical GLI girl like? Would I fit in?
There is no typical GLI girl. GLI girls include all kinds of girls from all over the country. Some already see themselves as leaders and some want to learn how to be better leaders. Our ideal camper wants to have fun. The ideal camper likes to try new things. We just ask that you are open-minded and willing to take some risks. We’ll take care of the rest.
Yes! We encourage you to bring a phone, but we hold it for you while you’re at camp. You’ll have a few opportunities during the session to call friends and family. Most of the time, though, you’ll be too busy! When you register for camp, you will get a GLI email address. This is an incoming mailbox. Our staff will print these emails and bring them to you every day. You’ll also have a couple of opportunities during camp to get online to your usual e-mail account to send outgoing emails. And don’t forget: you always have the good old-fashioned U.S. Postal Service!
What if I’ve never been away from home before?
GLI is the ideal place to take that first leap and try life outside of the nest. Our tight-knit community of 35 girls and seven staff members ensures that no one can fly under the radar and suffer in silence. It’s totally normal to be a little nervous at first. Before you know it, though, everyone feels like they’ve known each other forever! We promise to be there for you if this is your first time. There’s no better place to learn how to be on your own away from home.
Is everyone else coming with friends from home?
Most girls come to GLI by themselves. Being on your own can be hard for the first day, but remember most everyone else is on their own too. Coming to camp by yourself gives you a freedom to meet new girls and be yourself.
No problem! Just know that you guys won’t be roommates. We want everyone to start GLI from the same spot: getting to know new people!
Am I going to be in workshops all day?
No way. There are about 90 minutes of hands-on, interactive workshops a day. The rest of the day we like to explore leadership through projects, games, and activities. There is also free time for just goofing around and hanging out with friends.
We want your experience at GLI to be successful and happy. We want you to go home feeling proud, like you accomplished something you weren’t sure you could do. Because our staff is small, we do not have the resources to assist girls who require shadowing or extraordinary assistance during workshops. If you’re not sure, help your parent (or whoever’s sending you to GLI) fill out the application honestly about your strengths and challenges. We’ll call you and figure out what’s in your best interest.
You should definitely come back. If you’re in middle school, you’ll learn some of the same things as last year, but as your older, wiser self. You still have tons to learn about yourself and your friendships! You’ll meet a whole new batch of great friends, and you’ll deepen your understanding of what you learned last year. If you’re in high school, sign up for GLI Sophomore Summer. This is an amazing opportunity to learn leadership skills like public speaking, debate, and how tell your own story. Every Sophomore camper will go home with an Action Plan for a activist or consciousness raising project in her home community.
Where do I sleep?
We all stay in one dorm. Each girl has at least one roommate and lives on a hall with two staff and other girls. Don’t worry, the food is good.
As we get closer to camp we will send you all the info that you need for a successful trip to GLI.
