Sophomore Summer
Entering Grades 10 - 12 Second Year: July 26th - August 8th, 2010
So you’ve built your internal resume, climbed the high ropes course, and discovered your secret love for Poop Deck--now you want to change the world. We feel you. Meet Sophomore Summer, our program for GLI graduates who are ready to go against the grain. Come back for two weeks of life-changing workshops, extraordinary friendships, and the thrill of being the girl you’ve always wanted to be. Sophomore Summer will teach you how to create real change in your communities. We can teach you how to raise awareness about important issues, how to fight for better school lunches, new uniforms, or recycling programs, and how to start a blog that changes the way people think. You decide what you want to change and we’ll help you do it.
GLI graduates know that Good Girls don't rock the boat--great leaders do. You already have the skills to build strong relationships, to be yourself, and to push the limits of your comfort zone. Now, we want you to take it to the next level.
Workshops
Taught by the nationally recognized activist, twenty-two year old Shelby Knox, Sophomore Summer is chock full of hands-on workshops, fitness options, and the wacky GLI traditions (water fights, love notes, Slip ‘N Slide, Eye Moo). At night you have the choice to participate in GLI activities, work on your project, or just chill.
Your teacher and guide, Shelby Knox, was a regular high school girl who challenged the sex education policies of her conservative Texas town. Her journey into activism inspired an award-winning film, The Education of Shelby Knox. Shelby recently graduated from college and now travels the country as an activist and a speaker. She has appeared on The Today Show, Good Morning America, and the Dr. Phil Show, and in Glamour, Bust, and Seventeen magazines. Now she is coming to GLI to share her mad skills with you.
What will you learn?
Public speaking and debate; using YouTube for change; planning, organizing, fundraising, and writing to make change; social networking; zines, political participation, tabling at school and community events, effective petitioning, podcasts, blogging and more.
Project
You’ll create your own project to launch when you get home. You'll have the whole next year to put your project into action. What kind of projects could you design? Blogs, websites, awareness campaigns, films, fundraisers, clubs, petitions, podcasts, speeches or debates, and more. What can be the subject of your project? The environment, women's and girls’ issues, dress codes, dangerous advertising, animal rights, discrimination, health, stress, or whatever it is that gets you fired up. If you are looking for the right project to beef up your college application, this is it!
You’ll graduate from Sophomore Summer with a plan to become an agent of change. Not sure what you want to change? Don't worry, we'll help you if you need it.
Life at GLI
In Sophomore Summer, we offer many more choices than your first year at GLI. The mornings will feel familiar, but the afternoon is in your control. Shelby will offer afternoon workshops on certain activist skills. If you want to learn that skill (Podcasting, Advanced Debate, Grant Writing, Blogging, etc.), then you can go to the workshop. If you don’t need that skill, you can work on your project or just rest. Most of time you can choose whether or not to do sports, but with options like relaxing yoga, our annual kick-ball game and our new addition of touch football, you may be tempted to get out there every day to stretch, breath and have fun.
