Bio

Fiona Lowenstein attended The Girls Leadership Institute in 2008, the summer before entering ninth grade. GLI taught her many important lessons, but most of all how important it is to establish a network of girls like herself.  Since attending GLI, she's dedicated much of her time towards trying to establish a network of intelligent, passionate, interested girls.

Fiona's passion is politics. She's been interning with U.S. Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney since the age of twelve years old. Because of this, she was able to experience what life in a political office is like at a very young age.

At school she participates in several politics-related clubs. She is a member of her school’s debate team, Junior Statesmen Association, newspaper, student council, and several other groups that deal with the organization of the school. She believes it is especially important to pursue an interest on even the lowest levels…like at school or in a small community. In 2008, she started a website called BarbarasAngels.com dedicated to getting girls her age involved and interested in politics and feminism.

In the spring of 2009, Fiona was featured in the book, She’s Out There! 35 Women Under 35 Who Aspire To Lead. The book was a compilation of essays written by girls and women from ages five to thirty five who have aspirations to someday be president. The book granted her some very cool opportunities such as a book-signing, a chance to blog for the Huffington Post, and two appearances on national news.

Fiona has been pretty busy this past summer as well. She participated in a three week political program at Princeton University, where she took AP Comparative Politics, debated current issues plaguing our country, and got the chance to meet several fascinating speakers such as the ambassador from Iraq. She was also lucky enough to be selected for a program called Running Start. Running Start encourages high school girls to run for office through a five day program in Washington DC where they are introduced to important and inspiring women in politics and on the Capitol, taught to fundraise, give public speeches, and appear on camera.

Fiona tries and find time to read, write, and blog. She is also really interested in music, and plays piano, guitar, sings, and writes her own songs.

Fiona is currently a tenth grader in New York City.
